Nova! Nova! 2
60 Carols, Hymns & Anthems by Louis Halsey
Nova! Nova! 2 is the sister volume to Nova! Nova! which was published by Shorter House in 2021. Whereas the first volume exclusively draws on Louis Halsey’s extensive collection of arrangements of carol melodies, Nova! Nova! 2 brings original settings of carols and anthems together with Christmas hymns and carol arrangements.
The 123 pieces that combine in these two volumes mark a significant contribution to the age-old tradition of the Christmas carol. The two books are believed to be the largest compilations of Christmas choral music from the pen of one composer. Like its predecessor, this collection is equally at home in services and concerts. There are carols in Latin, German, French, Welsh, Catalan and Neapolitan – all with an English alternative – as well as carols with an inherent British flair. About one third of the carols are unaccompanied, with the rest accompanied by organ. There are carols for Advent, St Stephen’s Day, New Year and Epiphany, all scored for mixed-voice (SATB) choir.
