About Us

Shorter House is a specialist choral music publisher. We produce liturgical anthologies and composer collections, as well as individual pieces. We seek to discover and curate the best in new choral repertoire.

Choral specialists…

Shorter House is essentially a family business. Since 2010, we have published over 100 titles, commissioning over 20 new compositions. Our works have been premiered, broadcast, and recorded dozens of times. The Blossom Street (Naxos) CD of our Christmas collection “Sleep, Holy Babe” was Classic FM Christmas CD of the year 2011. We have had pieces featured on BBC1, BBC Radio 3 and 4 as well as many other local and international stations. We have received favourable reviews in: Choir and Organ, The Organ, Church Music Quarterly (RSCM), Organists’ Review, Muso and Classical Music Magazines.

We have attended every Assocation of British Choral Directors’ annual convention since 2010 (except 2015). Sadly, it has been cancelled in 2020.

We are stocked by all major UK retailers, such as: Blackwells, Presto, Foyles, South London Music. In the US and Canada we are distributed by C. F. Peters Corporation (New York). We also distribute some third party titles that fit our catalogue.

We look forward to building our catalogue and working with more composers and performers over the decades to come!

Tom Shorter

Director

Tom Shorter founded Shorter House in 2010 — after working for Edition Peters and Oxford University Press  in order to produce practical and inspired anthologies of liturgical choral repertoire. He has since enjoyed working with composers, conductors, and editors to produce many ground-breaking collections. He has collaborated with, among others: Hilary Campbell, John Duggan, Dr Andrew Earis, and George Richford and looks forward to continuing to grow the catalogue over the next decade.

Tom is also a conductor, singer, and organist. As a conductor, in 2017, he founded professional experimental vocal group Ex ore equi (from the horse’s mouth…), touring to France and Ireland (www.exoreequi.eu). He is Director of the London-based chamber choir, St Michael’s Chorale (who specialise in plainchant and polyphony), the Walbrook Community Choir (in the City of London), and Director of Music at Christ Church, Echo Square in Gravesend. He is a regular staff member at the Daniel Corkery Summer School, County Cork, Ireland  either as Choral Course Director, or providing music for the midweek concert. As a singer, Tom sings with professional choirs in London including: St Martin’s Voices (St Martin-in-the-Fields) and St Stephen Voices (St Stephen Walbrook). He was formerly Choral Scholar at St Sepulchre-without-Newgate (the National Musicians’ Church) and Head Chorister at Tewkesbury Abbey. Solo work includes the premiere of Simon Biazeck’s Songs of Soldier Poets for Tenor, Violin, and Cello. In 2018 Tom produced the highly acclaimed Naxos CD, This Day, for Blossom Street celebrating women composers and performers.
